Wasn't expecting quite so much of it to be closed off. They're still in the process of making some of the buildings safe and demolishing the ones that aren't. It's sad to see it like this, but the locals are so welcoming and friendly. We cycled around the main CBD and into the nearby Botanical Gardens and Park. There was loads going on in the park as it's the Rugby World Cup final - all Blacks vs. France. The street artist pic made me chuckle. Thats prob the biggest tree I've ever seen too. We hired a van and drove down the east coast to Oamaru (there's supposed to be 2 penguin colonies but we didn't see any). The town is small and very Victorian looking/feeling, loads of old traditional stores. There were Steampunk installations all around the town too. Pretty odd but cool. Got soaked at Moeraki (further down the east coast). These boulders are odd and look pretty impressive. More so when the tide is out. These are some pics from our first couple of days there. There's loads more to show too, but we need to get ourselves a hard drive! It was easier to interwebs in China :( Sydney harbour is really lovely. Can't believe how blue the sky is. We also went to the fish market at Pyrmont and got a mad platter... fish, squid, oysters, giant prawns, and chips. Damn it was good. Our hostel was at the edge of a small lake in the busy Hou Hai district near the Hutongs. We were at the quieter end near the fishermen and quieter bars and houses. On the first day we wandered round the city and visited Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Although the square was bleak it was still impressive to see, even with Mao watching our every move. The Forbidden city was fairly quiet (thanks to the rain) and was full of amazing intricate architecture and colours. Unfortunately the pictures don't do it justice, as is the case with most things we've seen. But you get the idea... We cycled to the Olympic village and stadium where we ended up watching an FIA GT1 race. Following the first hot pot experience and feeling a bit more confident ordering (pointing at) food we braved another hot pot restaurant. The chilli's and the szechuan peppers, ouch. We took a train to Badaling to visit the Great Wall. After a lesson on long multiplication from a Chinese Carol Vorderman (white board and all!) we then followed the crowds up to the entrance. The weather wasn't great but we were still able to see long stretches of the wall. We walked along a good stretch (it gets pretty steep and Cheryl was still feeling the burn from the mountains in Zhangjiajie!) then headed back to Beijing on a super crowded train. On our last full day in Beijing we hired bikes again and cycled to the Zoo. For £2 you gain entry to a park about 4 times the size of London zoo. We ended up staying in Hostel outside of the city in a little village called Wulingyuan (you can imagine the size of the place by looking at the police patrol car below). We were the only Westeners and only English speakers which made things pretty interesting, especially negotiating the seemingly illogical bus system throughout the whole of the park. On our first visit to the park we eventually made it to the cable car, via a small detour past the mini train which was also translated as "cable car", got to the top of Tianzi Mountain to find that we were inside a cloud and you could barely see your own feet let alone the amazing scenery or any blue people. Despite this we walked down the mountain and as we got out of the cloud the views were incredible, the huuuge groups of Chinese tourists on the other hand were not. We made a few more visits to the park including a trip up the highest outdoor elevator in the world. This time we got the bus labelled "elevator" and ended up at the cable car (the real cable car not the mini train). After a few more bus rides and some help from a mandarin speaking couple from Canada we took the lift straight into another cloud.We took the lift straight back down again and walked back (walking being a lot easier than playing the bus lottery). On our final full day we planned on taking the longest cable car in the world to the top of another mountain, after discussing this and eventually deciding that we would probably just end up in another cloud we went back to the lake and walked up a mountain. There was also brutal thunder and lightning the previous night which wasn't particularly reassuring. We took a 6 hour bus ride to Yangshuo for a few nights, hired scooters, bamboo rafts and bicycles and went exploring in the villages. At night the scenery is lit up and you can see it from the rooftop bars. It's a really pretty town surrounded by little villages. Matthew ate a pig dick, thats the curly thing on a stick. I ate unidentified fish and meat on a stick. I wasn't expecting Hong Kong to be quite as hot as it was. We found a really nice area on Temple Street to eat spicy cuttlefish/crab and drink beer at night... We took the cable tar to see the Tian Tan Buddah sat on top of the mountain. I'll get some better pics up of him, he's really cool. There's a Buddhist temple up there too where we ate supertasty £1 noodles. After 3 nights we took the train to Guangzhou, China. This is the view from the Canton Tower, the tallest structure in Guangzhou, I think one of the top 5 in the world.
